30th October 2006 The Bye..

So we think that we know what happens when a team has a bye.. After a long and hard but also entertaining season the regular line up for the Yorkies took a much needed rest for this week.

In an effort to improve my journalistic skills I decided that I would head along to see who would take the field for the Yorkies team. This is how the lineup looked with the Cap’ns Comments next to them.

The Old Man (Ian O'Brien) Still thinks he can outplay his boys.
The First Lady (Heather Paxman) She's tired, grumpy and just wants to hurt someone.
The Queen (Ange, Richards fiancé) The King got votes a few weeks ago just because Ange came to watch.
The American (Ken Cunningham) To my knowledge our only international supporter who has attended a game.
The Saint (Patti Dainton) She lives with all those boys, if they're all gonna be home tonight then she is going out.
Awa (Andrea Risson) Regularly responds to these ridiculous emails as if they are humorous.
Mern (Meredith Lydeamore) Lives in FNQ and last time she was in town made pom poms and brought them to the game.
Boof (Blake Moore) Because the rest of the team need someone to laugh at.

With the game at 4:30 in the afternoon it turns out that the opposition were all aged between 11 and 16, they proved that they had the fitness to be able to take the quick singles, and their skills in the field were remarkable at times with some blinding catches and deadly throws at the stumps.

The Saint was the captain for this match and won the toss electing to field first. The opponents first pair struggled to make the big shots and after making 20 in the first two overs, they threw away some wickets in the next two overs and ended with a partnership of 18. The bowlers to the first pair were The Queen (9), Boof (11), The Saint (3), and Awa (-5). After the jackpot ball conceded 8 runs, a wicket from the Queen’s final ball brought the young guys back to earth. It was an awesome catch taken on the back net by Mern. Boof conceded four 4s and picked up a runout after the ball was hit straight back at him and he dropped the catch onto the stumps to runout the non striker. After seeing the Saint’s bowling we can now see where the Dainton boys get their bowling prowess. The young guys were unable to read where the ball was headed and only managed to connect the bat to the ball twice. Awa picked up a hattrick from her last three balls with a stumping and two catches. The Old Man finally got into the action with the first catch and The first Lady took a juggled catch at mid wicket. The American was behind the Stumps.

The second pair put on just 6 runs, as they went up and down on the scoreboard, they consistently lost wickets with a few big shots in-between. The overs were bowled by The Old Man (2), Mern (3), The First Lady (-1) and Awa (2). The Jackpot ball was a dot ball and the ‘third ball’ rule meant that 5 runs were lost when The American cleanly took the ball. The rest of the over saw a couple of extras and a 3 from the final ball. Mern’s over was well bowled not allowing the youngins to get more than 2s, and a runout by The Saint in the middle kept the score down. The First Lady had conceded 9 runs from the first four balls, but came back with a Runout (Awa) and Catch (The American) at the end. Awa’s over saw a couple of shots into the back half of the court, but wickets through a Stumping (American) and Bowled kept the over to 2 runs.

The third pair came out blazing with some extraordinary power, they put on 44 runs with the overs taken by The American (27), The Queen (5), Mern (10) and The First Lady (2). The jackpot ball was hit to the back net for a total of 14 runs. This was followed by another 5 and 4 with the over ending with another 4. The Queen slowed the run flow with a runout (Queen) in the middle with two 3s and two 2s. Mern bowled a couple of extras and conceded one 4. The First Lady made it hard to get the big shots, as line and length meant they played mostly legside shots. A catch by Boof lifted the side’s enthusiasm for the rest of the innings.

The final pair was looking to make a big score but some silly running and nice fielding meant they went backwards from the start and ended with a partnership of -25 runs. The overs were bowled by Boof (3), The Saint (-10), The American (4) and The Old Man (-22). Boof’s jackpot ball went right through the guy for minus 10 runs, the next four balls were hit into the side net for 2s and the final ball went to the back net for five. The Saint started by conceding a couple of 2s and a single, but then a hattrick of catches really brought the opposition down to earth. The catches were taken by The Old Man in deep, Awa in close at the crease and Queen on the leg side. The American conceded 8 runs from the first four balls, which included a no ball for a full toss and a wide. He finally got a wicket when he blasted the ball through the batsman’s defences. The Old Man’s final over would have to be the best 16th over that I have ever seen, with a remarkable 5 wickets in a row and nearly had the double hattrick but he dropped the last ball into the side net. The wickets were bowled first ball, a catch by the Old Man, a Stumping followed by a catch by Awa and a difficult catch by Boof.

So the were set 44 runs for victory, which is a very low total in this competition. We didn’t know how well this team would bat together, but I think the remarkable comeback they showed in the final four overs bowling really grew their confidence and it showed through in their batting.

The Queen and The Saint batted first pair and put on 15 runs losing two wickets in the process. Most of their runs came through singles, but the Queen managed to hit a four in the second over and also hit the jackpot to the side net. The each lost a wicket, Queen was catch and Saint was runout. Queen made 8 runs from 11 balls including the wicket and The Saint made 3 from 13 balls after the wicket.

Boof and The Old Man batted second pair and I wasn’t sure how well they would run together. Luckily for Boof he remembered to bring a box to the game, as a few years ago for the Yorkies New Years Day match he turned up without one having never played the game before. After a slow start they built on it and lost just 1 wicket on their way to making 36. The Old Man proved to everyone that he still had the skills as he hit a few big shots including a 7 on his way to making 25 runs from 11 balls. Boof also hit a 7 in the over that they scored 19 runs from, but the one wicket meant that he made 9 runs from 13 balls.

When Awa and Mern came in third pair they were already 8 runs ahead of the opposition’s total. They took little risk in their pursuit and were unlucky to be runout once, although it was a brilliant pickup and throw by the fielder. They made 28 runs for the pair which included two 4s and a three. Awa made 13 runs from 13 balls after the wicket, and Mern made 15 runs from 11 balls.

The American and First Lady really tried to rub salt into the wounds of the opposition. They lost three wickets but still made 34 runs. The American charged the second ball he faced and was stumped, The First Lady was bowled in the second over and American was caught in the third over. They both got the ball to the back net with the American hitting a seven, and a four and The First Lady hitting a four. The American made 16 runs from 14 balls after the two wickets, while The First Lady made 16 runs from 10 balls after the wicket.

So the final score was 113 to 43. Overall the umpire was consistent for both sides, with a couple of bad decisions for each team. Some memorable moments from the game were four hat-tricks for the Yorkies and The Old Man almost getting the double hat trick. Boof trying to throw the stumps down several times and narrowly missing on both sides much like Bruce Reid did a few weeks ago, A few difficult catches that were taken by a number of players. They fought back brilliantly in the field for the final four overs.

It will be interesting to see who gets the votes for this match, it really is a tough choice as everyone contributed to the victory. We look forward to seeing everyone at the final next week. As yet I don’t know what time the match will be, but it will be posted here when we find out.

Drew, The Old Man actually got a Triple Hat Trick. Double is 4 wickets from 4 balls. I thought you of all people would have known that!
