18th July 2007, PreLim Final vs Black Hill Steve's

After the terrible Semi Final loss, we had to play the team which we had two close matches against during the season. Again we were Bowling first and didn't get our first wicket until the fourth over. This help them make 38 for the pair. The bowlers were Bruce (8), Philbert (11), Bob (11), The Don (8). They reached the back net twice with a 5 from Phil and 7 the Don.

The second pair lost 5 runs for uniform and had a bit of trouble getting going early with a runout by The King at the end of their first over which was bowled by Thorpe (4), before taking 12 runs off Mahstar, then another 7 from the King and a further 2 runs from Mahstar's second over. They hit a 7 from the King before Thorpe took a catch next ball. Mahstar's second over started with a catch by the Don and a catch by Philbert. It could have been a hattrick but Mahstar was unable to take the return catch. The pair made 20 runs.

The third pair lost quite a few wickets which kept them to 16 for the pair. The overs were bowled by Pax (13), Thorpe (-5), The King (9), Pax (-1). Bruce threw down the stumps for the runout in Thorpe's over before The King took a catch. Bruce got another runout in Pax's second over. Pax also got a stumping in the same over.

The final pair came in and put on 27 fairly easily even though they lost four wickets in the process. They hit several 4s and 3s as they got just past 100 runs. The overs were bowled by Philbert (9), Cap'n Bob (10), Bruce (-4), and The Don (12). Thorpe got a runout at the end of Philberts over, Bob got one wicket bowled. Bruce got two wickets with one return catch he took one handed and a second caught by Philbert.

With 102 runs need for victory that was 5 runs less than we reached last time versus this team, we should have been able to make the total comfortablly. Philbert and The King came in first a set us up with a wicket free 43 runs. They managed this with just one 5 and two 4s. Philbert made 20 from 11 legal and faced two wides and a noball. The King made 13 from 9 legal and faced a wide.

Cap'n Bob and Mahstar's batting woes continued, after gaining 8 runs from the first over, a runout and a catch dropped the score back below 50. We had trouble getting much more than singles and when we got runout again at the start of the fourth over we were back to 50 again. We gained a total of 10 runs for the pair with Bob making 14 from 10 legal, but got out twice and faced a wide. Mahstar made 5 from 12 legal, but got out once and faced a noball. Usually we end up with alot more wides called.

The Don and Bruce got us within reach of the total by making 20 runs. They were each caught once in the process, but a couple of 4s by Bruce kept us in with a shot. The rest of the runs came in 2s and singles. Their third over was their best with 11 runs taken from it. Remarkably they both scored 15 runs and lost a wicket, but The don faced 13 balls while Bruce faced 11. There were no extras called.

It was left upto Pax and Thorpe to once again chase it down. They got 8 from their first over and had the score upto 88 before Thorpe got caught. Their third over they took 13 runs with a 3 and several 2s. Needing 5 runs from the final over to win, they got the lead and just had to hold wickets for the final two balls, but a dodgey umpiring call for a caught behind on the second last ball meant they had to score off the last ball. This resulted in a runout on the last ball and ended the pair on 20 with Pax making 17 from 9 legal deliveries and faced two noballs, while Thopre made 10 from 11 legal delvieries, but got out three times and faced two wides.

Our final score was 93 just eight runs short. Following this loss some people blamed themselves for losing, and on the surface people could agree, but there were several other points in the match that could have won us the match. We shouldn't have allowed them to reach 100 runs in the first place. There were a several close runout calls that went against us both while batting and fielding. We also put down several catches. I had atleast three chances of taking a catch, but grounded each one.

Next season starts for us on July 30th at 7:30pm.

Congratulations to Cap'n Bob for taking out our MVP for this season and to Pax and Thorpe who took out the pairs by a hefty margin and Mahstar struggled to receive votes for most of the season.
